Aktun Chen Caves

• 3 miles (5 km) south of Akumal

These beautiful caves in the tropical jungle are just incredible. The cave tour takes you about 30 minutes through big underground caves, which end with a beautiful underground crystal blue water cenote. It's really gorgeous! Coming out from the caves you walk back through the jungle where you can see many native animals, monkeys and also many different kinds of snakes. Very interesting tour and much loved by children. A true jungle adventure perfect for a half day!

Xel-Ha Snorkeling Park

• 10 miles (17 km) south of Akumal

One of the most famous locations in Mexico for snorkeling and swim with the dolphins! This full day snorkel adventure in this big lagoon Xel-Ha is really a great tour. There are also a lots of delicious restaurants and souvenir shops. Traditional Mexican music accompanies you during the day.

Tankah

• 12 miles (21 km) south of Akumal

Tankah is 12 miles (21 km) south of Akumal. There is a cenote to swim in next to Casa Cenote, a nice "palapa" restaurant on the beach with great food (barbecue on Sunday). Swim and snorkel in the Caribbean Sea or in the beautiful fresh water cenote. You can see where the freshwater underground river empties into the ocean in front of the restaurant. A beautiful place to spend a half or full day.

Tulum

• 15 miles (26 km) south of Akumal

The small town and ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum are 15 miles (26 km) south of Akumal. You must see the Tulum Mayan Ruins!. These beautiful Mayan ruins overlook the Caribbean Sea and are not to be missed by first time visitors to Mexico's Mayan Riviera.

We recommend visiting the ruins early in the morning (9 to 10am) to beat the heat and all the tour buses coming from Cancun and Playa del Carmen. We also suggest using a guide for your tour through the ruins. A absolutely beautiful historical place! There are also many shops for souvenirs just outside the ruins.
